'Doubting' Thomas
Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you."
When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve,
was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said to him,
"We have seen the Lord."
So he said to them,
"Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails,
and put my finger into the print of the nails,
and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
And after eight days His disciples were again inside,
and Thomas with them.
Jesus came, the doors being shut,
and stood in the midst, and said,
"Peace to you!"
Then He said to Thomas,
"Reach your finger here, and look at My hands;
and reach your hand here, and put it into My side.
Do not be unbelieving, but believing."
And Thomas answered and said to Him,
"My Lord and my God!"
Jesus said to him,
"Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed.
Blessed are those who have not seen
and yet have believed."
John 20:19-29
Thomas was called 'the Twin' either because he had a twin brother or he had a close resemblance to another. He was probably often mistaken for his 'twin'!
There may have been many situations like the following: Thomas walks into a room with a group of people and someone there greets him harshly saying, "Hey, Thomas, surely, you know me, right. Why then did you ignore me when we crossed each other on the road the other day?" Thomas may have tried to explain to the friend that he did not walk on that road that particular day and it was probably his 'twin'! Thomas may have gone further to ask the friend whether he looked into the face of that man on that road and noticed a mole on his chin! He may have said, "The next time you see someone who resembles me, carefully look into his face and if there is no mark on his chin, it is definitely not me. Can you see this mole on my chin? Come, gently touch it and you can feel that it is slightly raised. Only that would prove that it's me!"
Thomas missed out on seeing the Risen LORD JESUS on the first occasion when He visited His disciples. When his friends spoke to Thomas about their LORD appearing to them, the first thing that comes to his mind is, mistaken identity or impersonation!
Because of his own experiences, Thomas, with a sincere heart, desired to clear all such mistakes before accepting their story. It could have been someone else resembling JESUS. He may have asked his friends, did you really see the nail prints on his hands and the spear-mark on his side? Even is you saw those marks, they could have been faked with some paint! Did you touch his hands and put your finger into the nail print and into his side to make sure it was really our LORD? He did not want to leave any room for doubt.
Having experienced the consequences of mistaken identity or impersonation, Thomas may have also taken His Master's teaching about the 'End of the age' seriously!
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives,
the disciples came to Him privately, saying,
"Tell us, when will these things be?
And what will be the sign of Your coming,
and of the end of the age?"
And Jesus answered and said to them:
"Take heed that no one deceives you.
For many will come in My name, saying,
'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many.
Then many false prophets will rise up
and deceive many.
For false christs and false prophets will rise
and show great signs and wonders to deceive,
if possible, even the elect.
See, I have told you beforehand.
Matthew 24:3-5, 11, 24-25
Obviously, Thomas wanted things 'Cut and Dried'. It means, no more negotiations, no more changes, it is settled - like the vegetables that are cut and dried and don't change, unlike the fresh ones. His faith had to be 'Cut and Dried'!
The Risen LORD makes a second appearance while Thomas is in the room with the other disciples. He graciously encounters Thomas to clear all his doubts. Thomas makes a 'Cut and Dried' declaration, "My Lord and my God!" For Thomas, there was no turning back from that point. According to tradition, he travelled all the way to India to preach the Gospel of the LORD JESUS CHRIST and was martyred there!
The LORD understands our weaknesses and reveals Himself to us in ways that would clear our doubts!
Now as they said these things,
Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them,
and said to them, "Peace to you."
But they were terrified and frightened,
But they were terrified and frightened,
and supposed they had seen a spirit.
And He said to them, "Why are you troubled?
And He said to them, "Why are you troubled?
And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself.
Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself.
Handle Me and see,
for a spirit does not have flesh and bones
as you see I have."
When He had said this,
When He had said this,
He showed them His hands and His feet.
But while they still did not believe for joy,
But while they still did not believe for joy,
and marveled,
He said to them, "Have you any food here?"
So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish
So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish
and some honeycomb.
And He took it and ate in their presence.
And He took it and ate in their presence.
Luke 24:36-43
We must seek the LORD diligently for ourselves from the Scriptures and the leading of the Holy Spirit so that we our able to stand firm in our faith during times of testing and trials. The LORD Himself will help us if we sincerely pursue Him in obedience.
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee,
to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.
When they saw Him,
When they saw Him,
they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,
"All authority has been given to Me
in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all things
that I have commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always,
even to the end of the age." Amen.
Matthew 28:16-20
Even after meeting with the Risen LORD, some of the eleven disciples doubted! After our LORD JESUS met with them on the mountain and commissioned them, and they saw Him ascend into the clouds with their own eyes, their faith became 'Cut and Dried'! All of them served Him until the end of their lives on earth!
Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table;
and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart,
because they did not believe
those who had seen Him after He had risen.
And He said to them, "Go into all the world
And He said to them, "Go into all the world
and preach the gospel to every creature.
He who believes and is baptized will be saved;
He who believes and is baptized will be saved;
but he who does not believe will be condemned.
And these signs will follow those who believe:
And these signs will follow those who believe:
In My name they will cast out demons;
they will speak with new tongues;
they will take up serpents;
they will take up serpents;
and if they drink anything deadly,
it will by no means hurt them;
they will lay hands on the sick,
and they will recover."
So then, after the Lord had spoken to them,
So then, after the Lord had spoken to them,
He was received up into heaven,
and sat down at the right hand of God.
And they went out and preached everywhere,
And they went out and preached everywhere,
the Lord working with them and
confirming the word through
the accompanying signs. Amen.
Mark 16:14-20
And He led them out as far as Bethany,
and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
Now it came to pass, while He blessed them,
Now it came to pass, while He blessed them,
that He was parted from them
and carried up into heaven.
And they worshiped Him,
And they worshiped Him,
and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and were continually in the temple
and were continually in the temple
praising and blessing God. Amen.
Luke 24:50-53
Let us strive to be 'Cut and Dried' in our faith and then pursue the LORD diligently and serve Him until the end!
My brethren, count it all joy
when you fall into various trials,
knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
But let patience have its perfect work,
knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.
But let patience have its perfect work,
that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all liberally and without reproach,
and it will be given to him.
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting,
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting,
for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea
driven and tossed by the wind.
For let not that man suppose
For let not that man suppose
that he will receive anything from the Lord;
he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
James 1:2-8
